The key duties of the position include The Role Defence Legal (DL) is a national organisation, which provides legal advice and other legal support services to Defence. We draw upon the professional talent of our people to pursue excellence in support of Defence operations, command, management and administration. As part of the General Counsel - Defence Branch, this position provides legal support to the Estate and Infrastructure Law Team. The day-to-day tasks undertaken by the role will include: Providing legal advice to internal Defence clients and draft and review documents, in particular for the Security & Estate Group's Infrastructure Division on matters relating to the Defence Estate covering all jurisdictions within Australia involving: Construction contracts, project administration, dispute resolution and legislation applicable to buildings and infrastructure Leasing and licensing of the Defence Estate, property related disputes and legislation applicable to the Commonwealth Property Management Framework Environmental issues, native title and heritage matters affecting the Defence Estate Drafting, reviewing and providing legal advice on various legal documents including ministerial submissions and briefs This role is eligible for an additional remuneration benefit known in Defence as a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP). This enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the base salary otherwise payable under the Defence Enterprise Agreement (DEA), for positions in occupational disciplines/classifications that are critical to Defence capability. About our Team The Estate & Infrastructure Law Team (E&I Law) in Defence Legal provides legal services primarily to the Security & Estate Group's Infrastructure Division. Infrastructure Division manages the development, maintenance and disposal of the Defence estate: one of the largest real estate portfolios in Australia. To manage the Defence estate, Infrastructure Division reviews, develops and constructs facilities and sites, often planning out to thirty years in advance. They create heritage and environment policy for all Defence properties across Australia. Property acquisitions, leasing, disposal and management of estate related native title, offshore mining and petroleum exploration issues all fall within Infrastructure Division's portfolio of responsibilities. The E&I Law Team play a crucial role in managing legal risk for Infrastructure Division. In addition, the E&I Law Team provide legal advice and assistance to other areas of Defence requiring construction, property, native title or environmental law expertise. Our team represent Defence on large-scale military construction and leasing projects, renewable energy projects, undersea cable projects and on working groups relating to legislative matters affecting Defence. Our Ideal Candidate Ideally, at least 5 years post qualification experience in commercial law relevant to construction law and/or property law Experience in leasing and/or conducting property law matters across multiple Australian jurisdictions would be highly desirable Experience in both transactions and dispute work would be highly desirable Excellent communication, relationship management and client engagement skills Ability to lead and work collaboratively as a member of a team, and manage competing priorities in a high tempo environment
