What you'd be doing in this role As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve. At the moment, this role is focused on: As an individual contributor, you will contribute directly to the Design Import team goals by writing code, reviewing pull requests, and creating and reviewing design documents. Develop a deep understanding of how file formats such as PDF, PowerPoint, and Word are structured and the Canva Document Format are structured and operate the Design Import service at scale. Contribute to planning and goal setting within the team. Collaborate with other teams and engineers to support new product features while maintaining the integrity of the Design Import service and it's API. Investigate production incidents and apply the learning to our team processes and codebase. Identify and address inefficiencies and bottlenecks both technical and operational. You're probably a match if You have experience with distributed system observability such as monitoring, metrics, log aggregation and tracing. We primarily use DataDog and ElasticSearch. Equivalent experience will be considered. You have commercial experience developing complex web applications You will be more than happy to work in our environment and are familiar with Java, RDS, and AWS. You have experience developing APIs with backend web frameworks and working with third-party open-source libraries. You are firmly grounded in computer science and engineering fundamentals including concurrency, multithreading, data structures, solution design, architecture, and design patterns You are willing to dive into technical domains you are not familiar with yet, such as proprietary file formats and the concepts that come with them. You will have the ability to work with a diverse range of individuals from different backgrounds and with different professional and personal needs. About the team The Design Import team's mission is to empower anyone to edit any file format in Canva This includes supporting users in editing documents created using the common file types such as PDF, PowerPoint and many more. Our focus is to make it easy for our customers to bring their existing designs into Canva. We strive for high visual fidelity as well as excellent edit-ability on imported documents, and are constantly expanding the number of file formats that can be imported.
