Legal Counsel / Company Secretary — Brisbane CBD, Brisbane

A rare opportunity to join a market leader in Agribusiness in this pivotal legal position For over 100 years, QSL has been committed to serving Queensland’s sugar industry, trusted as a world leader in raw sugar marketing, pricing, payment and logistics services. We have an enduring dedication to the personal success of the thousands of regional Qld cane farming families, sugar millers and sugarcane communities, who rely on us to take their product to the world, with all net value we create returned to the industry. While founded in a deep history, the future for the Queensland sugar cane industry is dynamic, also now leaning into global issues like food security, ESG performance and rapidly advancing renewable energy platforms. The industry stands at the cusp of what is perhaps the greatest potential change in the landscape in over 150 years, and we have set ourselves a bold vision to be an enabling driver of a flourishing Queensland sugarcane industry for the next 100 years. Due to a long-serving, valued employee retiring, we seek an experienced Legal Counsel / Company Secretary. This role plays a defining role in providing generalist legal advice and support to the QSL Board and senior leaders on a wide range of matters, including corporate decision-making, contract management and review, commercial projects, competition law, employment law and general risk and opportunity management. As Company Secretary, this role also partners very closely with the QSL Board, ensuring regulatory compliance, managing corporate governance, facilitating effective Board operations and communications, and shareholder and Board/management relations. As our sole legal practitioner, you’ll report to the Chief Executive Officer and will partner closely with the Executive team and Board who value articulate, incisive legal guidance and input. You will have a significant and respected legal background and a strong commercial skillset, equally skilled at handling both complex and substantial legal issues and general operational and governance matters. With excellent attention to detail, executive maturity and a commitment to continuous improvement, you’ll be working in a dynamic environment, identifying opportunities and resolving complex legal issues on a range of strategic and operational matters that underpin our current performance expectations and the pursuit of our future vision. In addition, as Company Secretary/Legal Counsel, you will support the Board with the administration of our constitution and assist with preparing work papers, agendas, minutes and terms of reference. This position is suited to an experienced Legal Counsel / Company Secretary who brings sound legal advice and contract advice, compliance, and Corporate Governance, including Board & Board Committee Governance. As an experienced company secretary, you will have post-graduate qualifications in governance, legal tertiary qualifications, and the relevant legal certifications to undertake legal work for an organisation. Prior experience in agribusiness or a ‘not-for-profit’ context would be beneficial, but this is not a prerequisite. What is important is an appetite to be a strategic partner with a team pursuing a high standard of performance we demand of ourselves for the stakeholders of the Queensland sugar industry.
