We're an agency in the Department of Treasury and Finance portfolio, established under the Victorian Managed Insurance Authority Act, and report to the Assistant Treasurer. We provide insurance and risk advice to government departments and agencies, with more than 4,600 clients, ranging from small community service organisations to public hospitals, schools, and core service providers. We also provide domestic building insurance to builders, giving Victorian homeowners peace of mind for building projects valued over $16,000. Our unique perspective across Victorian Government clients is an opportunity for learning and development in the risk and insurance industry as well as the broader public sector, creating deep Your role As a Construction Underwriter, you are a key member of our Construction Insurance Team. You leverage your relevant insurance industry knowledge and expertise to provide specialised advice and solutions for Victoria's major infrastructure plans, known as the Big Build, as well as other major project activity across our State, including rail, roads, hospitals, schools, and other government infrastructure. Please see the link below for more information on some of the State's transport infrastructure plans https://bigbuild.vic.gov.au/ You collaborate with key stakeholders across the business to support the implementation of the optimum client risk transfer model by delivering timely, fit-for-purpose advise and solutions. You will also be required to work closely with our reinsurance broker to ensure the products VMIA offers are consistent with what is available in the commercial market and that VMIA is able to procure cost effective reinsurance. Your role reports to the Head of Construction in the Risk, Insurance and Claims Solutions Division. What you do You build and maintain specialised and expert knowledge in construction insurance You will collaborate and engage with key internal and external stakeholders You support Senior Underwriters, Major Construction Project Lead and Head of Construction to ensure the availability of a contemporary, best practice construction products that are priced competitively relative to the private sector and meets the insurance needs across VMIA's entire client base. You engage with the Head of Construction, Major Construction Project Lead and Senior Underwriter, and other underwriters in the Construction Team to shape the insurance strategy strategically and proactively for our clients. You will work with other team members with shared responsible for a portfolio of clients involved in building the State's infrastructure and will attend client meetings as requested to provide accurate and timely advice. You protect the client, product, and program integrity by ensuring the currency and accuracy of policy information is maintained within VMIA systems. You develop relationships and networks with leading stakeholders across the insurance sectors including public and private industry to ensure currency of knowledge, information, expertise, and practice in the VMIA. You collate and analyse reports for the routine monitoring of portfolio development, corporate reporting and to inform decision making. You advise on defects or omissions with underwriting data, design of reports and/or data structures within VMIA systems. You participate in the development and delivery of occasional insurance related client training programs or presentations at the VMIA or client premises. Who you work with Internal: Construction Team members, including Head of Construction, Major Projects Lead, Underwriters, and support personnel. Claims team members - assisting in policy interpretation, determining claims quantum and engineering support. The wider Insurance and Risk Services Team External: VMIA Clients – you provide a professional standard of service and support to VMIA clients through relevant and timely advice. VMIA reinsurance brokers – you assist in the coordination of the broking services contract, relationship, and work outputs to support the reinsurance and insurance activities of the VMIA. Consulting and professional service providers – you engage with a panel experts to enhance VMIA's client services. Actuaries – you assist with input to premium calculations, including loss experience, underwriting performance of product and client segments and solvency requirements. Professional associations, private sector insurance organisations and Government insurance agencies – you promote the profile and work of the VMIA and remain abreast of trends, standards, developments, and future issues. Reinsurers – you develop a mutual understanding of the VMIA client base and risk profiles with underwriters and their engineers. You keep abreast of emerging trends both globally and within Australian markets. About you This role would suit a candidate who has worked as a general insurance broker, underwriter or other relevant are of insurance with demonstrated experience providing strategic insurance advice or assessing insurance risk. Construction insurance knowledge and exposure will be highly regarded but not mandatory. You have a strong technical background, including the ability to navigate and interpret policy wordings to ensure that the insurance provisions of construction contracts are achievable and compliant. You have sound strategic and conceptual thinking and planning capability. You have well-developed interpersonal, negotiation and communication skills with the ability to positively engage and influence internal and external stakeholders. You have an ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic team environment. You are a natural networker utilising your strong relationship skills to be a prominent member of the VMIA and wider insurance industry.
