Deputy Principal Legal Officer - Native Title Are you an experienced legal professional with a passion for Aboriginal rights and cultural heritage matters? Our client is seeking a Deputy Principal Legal Officer to lead a dynamic team in North Queensland. THE ROLE As the Deputy Principal Legal Officer, you will work under the direction of the Principal Legal Officer, leading a dedicated team to ensure the effective performance of our organisation's statutory functions. Your primary responsibilities will include providing high-level legal services, offering general legal advice, and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Legal Unit. RESPONSIBILITIES Lead and supervise a team of legal practitioners and support staff. Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, court orders, and contractual obligations. Allocate and direct staff during peak workloads to meet deadlines. Conduct legal research, progress Native Title claims, and represent the organisation in court as assigned. Negotiate with respondent parties, develop agreements, and provide advice to Native Title Holders. Prepare reports on legal and operational issues, contracts, agreements, and other legal documents. Develop materials for workshops and seminars on Native Title issues. YOU Demonstrated knowledge of Aboriginal societies, culture, and contemporary issues affecting Aboriginals. Ability to interact effectively and respectfully with Aboriginal communities. Practicing Certificate (OR eligibility to gain one) in Queensland and enrolment on the Roll of Practitioners of the High Court of Australia. Knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Native Title Act 1993 and others. Ability to manage and support a professional team, conduct legal research, and coordinate legal activities. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. Proficiency in Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook.
