Taking into account CSIRO’s strategic objectives and legislative obligations, the focus of this role will be in the areas of FOI, privacy and information law, with opportunities to work also in other practice areas. This unique position will allow you to respond to a broad range of matters with a diverse group of stakeholders within Australia’s largest national science and research organisation. Your duties will include: Providing high-quality, pragmatic legal advice, documentation and decision-making support, primarily in relation to FOI, privacy and information law: that is accurate, clear, timely, risk-adjusted and solutions-focused; and which takes into account strategic priorities, applicable law and CSIRO and Commonwealth policy considerations. Developing a deep understanding of the business, strategic objectives, external regulators, stakeholders, political context and relevant industry partners of CSIRO generally. Demonsting FOI, privacy and information law leadership through, amongst other things, handling requests, providing practical advice and supporting and participating in relevant internal education, compliance programs and working groups. Exercising initiative and influencing to build relationships with key internal clients (such as the Director Governance, Chief Operations Officer, Chief Information Officer, Chief Information Security Officer, Chief Finance Officer, Director Corporate Affairs and Director Science Impact & Policy) and helping position the Enterprise Legal Team as a “trusted advisor” in CSIRO. Contributing to the on-going legal education and training of internal clients and CSIRO staff in areas of strategic priority falling within the Enterprise Legal Team practice, including FOI, privacy and information law. Maintaining confidentiality when dealing with personal and commercially sensitive information. Collaborating widely, communicating effectively and resolving challenges using creativity, reasoning and past experience. Location: CSIRO Sites at Black Mountain (Canberra) Australian Capital Territory or Clayton, Victoria preferred. A hybrid working environment will be available. Salary: EL1/EL2 equivalent. AU $121,455 to $142,321 per annum, plus up to 15.4% superannuation Tenure: Indefinite Reference: 95720 To be considered you will need: A degree in law from an Australian tertiary institution (or a comparable overseas legal qualification) which is appropriate to the classification and duties of the Legal Counsel (FOI/Privacy) role, and also a current Australian practising certificate (or entitlement to hold an Australian practising certificate). A minimum of approximately three (3) years of post-admission experience, in private, in-house and/or government role(s) in the primary legal practice areas of FOI, privacy and information law, with a minimum of at least 1-year full time in FOI law. In-depth and extensive technical knowledge and applied post-admission experience in public information law in particular FOI, privacy and general information law The ability to work independently, autonomously, efficiently and effectively. Demonstrated ability to foster and develop strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders (including regulatory bodies such as the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner and the Commonwealth Ombudsman). A flexible approach and the ability to anticipate and manage problems in ambiguous situations.
